historical-nonfiction:

Catherine the Great of Russia was a pretty amazing gal. Here’s why:
Catherine was actually German, christened Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst.
She married the heir to the Russian Empire, Grand Duke Peter of Holstein (like the cows) who was unfit to rule. She overthrew him in a coup soon after they ascended the throne. He quickly died in mysterious circumstances while in prison.
Commissioning building all over Russia, Catherine founded academies, journals, libraries, and corresponded with French Encyclopedists, including Voltaire, Diderot, and d’Alembert.
Catherine was infamous for her love affairs. There was a standardized testing system to choose them, including sleeping with one of her handmaidens to check for annoying habits like snoring or kicking.
